In Art Foundation, we will focus on creating five perceptions in artwork:
1) Edges
2) Spaces
3) Relationships in the Design
4) Light and Shadow
5) the Whole Design
Artwork created in this class will help students develop observations and skills for considering and understanding these parts of their designs to create meaningful and skilled artwork.

Contour Drawings
Elements used: Line, Shape, Space
Elements used: Line, Shape, Space
Choose to draw the row of ducks or cars.
Create a grid of 8 inches by 2 inches, one inch apart, on a blank paper. Create the same grid on the row of objects (ducks or cars).
Next to the grid on the blank page, create another grid of four rectangles, 4 inches by 2 inches, 2 inches apart.

Create a drawing from an a close angle/view to cause foreshortening.
Create one charcoal drawing and one pastel drawing. Practice using the materials by shading a three dimensional shape and then begin a drawing of an object with value/shading.
Three in One
Combine paper for charcoal, pastel and colored pencil. Create one design across the papers using all three materials.

Figure with Lined Patterns
Search for a silhouette figure of a person.
Draw the figure and add lines according to their pose. Next, add a pattern of stripes in a different direction in the background.

Geometric Abstract Artwork
Create a design with geometric shapes.

Create a drawing of an animal in geometric shapes.
Positive and Negative Space
Draw an object twice. With the first drawing, add color and detail to the object. With the second drawing, add color and detail to the background.

Choose an object that has layers or segments and add value (shading) from light to dark according to the pattern.
Choose an animal to draw with gestural lines for its shape.
Add a background in a grid pattern with colors to show its environment.

Choose a theme/idea to draw six different images or designs. Add one color to each square and also add value: one place being light, one place being dark and one place with a fade between dark and light.
Create a drawing with a foreground, middleground and background. Draw it once (we will trace it for the two other times). On each drawing, color a different part of the design.
